EOI for Powerhouse renewable energy solution

About the Powerhouse renewable energy solution EOI

The Powerhouse is one of Australia’s oldest and most important cultural institutions. It is Australia’s only museum of applied arts and sciences with an exceptional collection of approximately 500,000 objects. The Powerhouse is undertaking significant renewal through the creation of Powerhouse Parramatta, expansion of Powerhouse Castle Hill, the digitisation of Powerhouse Collection, and the renewal of Powerhouse Ultimo.

The Powerhouse organisation has set a goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2025. To meet this goal, they want to transition away from using fossil fuels and rely entirely on renewable energy sources at all their sites, including Powerhouse Castle Hill.

EOI—Renewable energy solution solar photovoltaics and battery energy storage system MAAS – EOI 23/004

They’re currently seeking expressions of interest from experienced solar photovoltaic system designers or power purchase agreement service providers to install a renewable energy solution at Powerhouse Castle Hill. The primary objective of the Powerhouse renewable energy solution project is to maximize the potential for onsite renewable energy generation.

An energy audit was conducted in May 2022, and a more detailed solar feasibility study was done by the NSW Sustainable and Net Zero Government Team. The study demonstrates the viability of a rooftop solar PV installation and provides an example of a potential system installation.

The project’s scope is to support the Powerhouse Climate Action Plan objective of achieving net zero carbon emissions from buildings. Powerhouse Castle Hill has considerable roof space across multiple buildings, presenting a significant opportunity for onsite renewable energy generation.

Powerhouse Climate Action Plan 2022-25

The Powerhouse Climate Action Plan 2022-25 commits to generating onsite renewable energy to support the target to achieve net zero carbon building operations by 2025. The Powerhouse is one of Australia’s oldest and most important cultural institutions. It is Australia’s only museum of applied arts and sciences with an exceptional collection of approximately 500,000 objects. The institution is currently in a state of renewal, with the establishment of Powerhouse Parramatta, the renewal of Powerhouse Ultimo, the expansion of Powerhouse Castle Hill, the digitisation of the Collection and the ongoing operation of Sydney Observatory.

Ownership, financing, and maintenance options

The Powerhouse is considering different options for the ownership, financing, and maintenance of the system, including industry-leading product innovation. They’re open to proposals for participation in broader programs such as microgrids, community access to renewable energy, or power purchase agreements, which can be factored into the system’s utilization and financial measures.

They’re also considering the potential for equipment supply sponsorship, installation, or future management support to ensure a long-term (10+ years) renewable energy partnership.
