Renewable energy zones (REZS)

The NSW Government’s Electricity Strategy and Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap has set out a plan to deliver the state’s first five REZs in the Central-West Orana, New England, South-West, Hunter-Central Coast and Illawarra regions to deliver renewable energy network infrastructure. It supports the implementation of the Australian Energy Market Operator’s (AEMO) Integrated System Plan.

REZs are renewable equivalents to traditional coal-powered power stations. They combine generation, transmission, storage and system strength services. They aim to deliver affordable energy to replace existing power stations over the next 15 years.

Hunter Transmission Project

The HTP will provide:

  1. reliable supply of energy to the load centres of Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong
  2. permanent network solution to address the projected 2025-26 Energy Security Target breach.

The first augmentation of HTP (HTP 1) will provide 5GW of additional transmission capacity on the network and is scheduled to be completed by mid 2027. HTP1 is being managed by an integrated project team (IPT) comprising specialist contractors, consultants and EnergyCo personnel.
